Top 7 Biggest Human Resources Scandals in History

By admin On April 12th, 2011

When people behave badly in corporate America, that means that there are some consequences. If you are wondering what happens with unethical actions, check out these stories.

1. Tyco: The former CEO was brought up on over 30 counts of theft and this totaled something to the tune of nearly $600 million. He was obviously brought up on trial and therefore the sentence was fittingly harsh. This former CEO now faces up to 25 years in jail for literally robbing the company that he served. A true HR nightmare and then some!
2. Arthur Anderson: Though they were always a celebrated company in the consulting field, they made some rather monumental mistakes. They had to give up their rights to practice as Certified Public Accountants due to their mistakes. Since this is a big part of what a consulting company such as this does, this resulted in some serious prosecution and the loss of over 85,000 jobs. This also meant that the company had to go through a huge exercise in rebranding themselves since they could no longer claim that they were experts in this field.
3. Enron: This is a company that will always be famous for wrongdoings. Just hearing the name makes you think of a corporate scandal. Many think of the financial wrongdoings here which were big enough, but this then turned into a rather large HR nightmare. The unethical way in which the finances were handled, the way in which employees were asked to keep quiet, and the unconventional tactics used in both rank top of the list. This was an HR nightmare as the company nearly folded overnight resulting in huge job loss and a great deal of people put in terrible positions all because of the unethical acts of those at the top.
4. Montgomery Ward: They used to be a big name within the retail world. They started slipping amidst great competition and after a worst than expected holiday season, they had to close their doors. This meant that they were of course bankrupt, that they had to liquidate what they had left, and that nearly 37,000 employees lost their job. This happened very quickly even though there was some warning in advance leaving those that worked there without much at all.
5. TWA: They went through near bankruptcy a couple of times and then it seemed like they were getting it together. Since they sort of put a band aid on the whole thing, they inevitably failed. They were ultimately acquired by American Airlines after some very bad publicity and some poor numbers. They just couldn’t recover and many which worked for the company as they knew it lost their jobs.
6. United Fruit Company: Another case of what goes wrong when those at the top partake in improper actions. This time they were found to be bribing government officials for improper acts, and therefore they were brought down hard. People lost their jobs, the people at the top were brought up on charges, and the company ultimately had to be sold off in pieces because it couldn’t survive after this mess.
7. WorldCom/MCI: The fraud that occurred here was unimaginable. There’s a reason that you never hear of this company anymore, because it was such a mess that it had to be taken over. Verizon took over what remained of this company and turned it into something successful. The people that worked for WorldCom/MCI weren’t all so lucky though as they lost their jobs when things went down in flames for the top notch people being greedy and taking what wasn’t rightfully theirs.

People do bad things and then others have to pay. The companies listed here had some pretty big HR scandals and the fallout is often unbelievable.

Education

One of the best things we can have in this world is to finish a degree because education is something that cannot be stole by anyone. The education is the best thing that the parents can give to their children. On the field of education, there are lots of programs that is made to make the education very accessible to everyone. The governments know the importance of education to a nation.

Yesterday, a friend of mine came to visit me in my home and he told me that he is studying at home. He can finish a degree online because he found a site where he can continue his studies. To become a degree holder can put a person on top of the survival competition in this planet of ours. Those who have no degrees to show when applying for a job seems to be the least to be hired and those who have finished their studies are the ones who succeed in life either being an employee or an entrepreneur.
